On March 8, 2018, the CSSE Green Team received its official certification and flag from The Oklahoma Green Schools Program.
Students from the St. Eugene Green Team received their certification and OK Green Schools flag from Sara Ivey, OK Assoc. Of Environmental Educators President, at an all school assembly following weekly school mass. To receive Oklahoma Green Schools certification, the school followed and completed a six step process: Registration, Forming a Green Team, Conducting an Investigation, Implementing a Student Action Project, Challenging Others, and Applying for Certification.
Only in their second year of existence at St. Eugene, the Green Team implemented an all school recycling program this past fall. Last spring, the students wrote letters to The Village City Council requesting recycling bins that were initially denied because the school is not considered residential. Upon receiving the letters explaining how important recycling is to the students, The Village granted the school access to curbside bins. By selling t-shirts, reusable tote bags, and asking for donations, the Green Team club raised enough money to buy recycling bins for each classroom in the school this past fall. Before their meetings twice a month, the students pick up the recycling from each classroom, as well as school and church offices, to empty into the curbside bins for pick up.
In addition to their recycling program, the Green Team hosted St. EuGREEN Fest last April. The event brought the school community out during the weekend to clean up and beautify the area around the school. With the success of their first year, Green Team again hosted St. EuGREEN Fest on April 22, 2018. More than 100 students, parents and school friends attended to help make the community a better place.
